Every Trick in the Book | Effective Reading Instruction (1 hour or 3 hour workshop)

One-Hour Session or Three-Hour Workshop for World Language Teachers

Reading poses unique challenges for language learners. Teachers must introduce low-frequency vocabulary, limit translator use, gauge understanding, and encourage high-level thinking. Come explore techniques to support your novice and intermediate readers including tips for selecting good texts, pre- during- and post- reading activities, and tying reading to other language modes. You will leave this session with ‘every trick in the book’ to apply this week in class!

In the one-hour session participants will:

  • Explore their own and their students’ reading habits and use of strategies

  • Discuss how this information can inform classroom instruction

  • Learn practical strategies to tie reading skills to:

    • vocabulary instruction

    • listening instruction

    • writing instruction

    • making predictions

    • writing a structured summary

In the three-hour workshop, participants will do all of the above plus:

  • Learn techniques to find and use frequent, short texts throughout the curriculum

  • Discuss and try several pre-, during-, and post-reading strategies

  • Learn to curate an engaging classroom library

  • Investigate ways to structure and assess independent reading in the target langauge
